Welcome to the Newfoundland & Labrador Archaeological Society’s 2023 ‘Archaeology Symposium’!

November 24-25th, 2023
Queen’s College, Memorial University of Newfoundland

This two-day symposium will be an opportunity to share research and learn about what work is being done around the province and in the wider Atlantic world. We encourage submissions from archaeologists, historians, folklorists, and geographers with ties to archaeological work from all walks of life and stages of their careers. The symposium will be preceded by our annual AGM and Keynote Speaker, with a small mixer to follow on Nov 24th.

NLAS AGM – Nov 24th, 2023

Our annual AGM will kick off the Symposium on the evening of Nov 24th at Queen’s College (7pm-8pm, doors open at 6pm). Our Keynote Speaker will be announced shortly, and the speech will be followed by the annual general meeting for the NLAS, which is open to the public. We’ll be voting in new board members this year, so if you’re interested in joining our board this is the meeting for you! The AGM will be proceeded by a mixer in the Great Hall of Queen’s College, in collaboration with the student group MUNarch, from 8pm-10pm. We look forward to meeting everyone there!

Our Keynote Speaker this year is Don Pelley, who is being honoured by the NLAS with a Lifetime Achievement Award for Archaeological Excellence, for his contributions to archaeology within the province.

Archaeology Symposium – Nov 25th, 2023

The first NLAS Archaeology Symposium will take place on Nov 25th, 2023, (Doors open 8:45 am). There will be an illustration workshop that participants can sign up for in the morning, and talks will commence afterwards. There will be an illustration workshop from 9 am – 11:45 am with a coffee break in the middle, with talks from 11:45 am – 4:15 pm. We invite all attendees to join us for a closing party at Toslow at 7pm!
